What do you do about a broken nail on a dog? it's bleeding a lot.?

My dog came in all bloody, and when I checked him over I noticed that the highest nail on his front paw is broken at the very top. It's been about 20 mins. and it has not stopped bleeding.

What should I do about it?What do you do about a broken nail on a dog? it's bleeding a lot.?
That happened to my daughters small dog. She had to take him to emergency for stitches! Your guy may need stitches also. I suggest finding the nearest Pet Emergency Center right away. It is worth it. That is also painful for your dog. Last resort........a neosporin ointment or spray and a good bandage for the night....but watch him in case he tries to pull it off. Try to hold the drinking of water for the most part ';during the night'; so he won't have to walk much on the foot to go outside too often to pee or other. Emergency center would be the best choice....asap.

Good luck now. What do you do about a broken nail on a dog? it's bleeding a lot.?
put cornstarch or flour on it and hold ....if it will not stop even after you've covered the nail and really held on (it may take a lot of the stuff to really clog the vein) it MAY need to go to the vet...dont panic its not a huge deal and most likely the bleeding will slow any eventually stop...he can break it back open when her walks too so keep and eye on him for an hour or so afterwards. if the hard casing in gone and the fleshy vein is sticking out you will need to watch it very closely until it grows back out,,
Flour is a good coagulator, put a good handful on it and hold him still. If you have arrowroot or cornstarch, use that instead, it'll make the blood clot quicker (if you cook you may have those, but if you don't just use the flour).

Keep him still for a while, to help things clot up. Don't soak the foot, that comes way later once the blood has a chance to stop and the tissues start binding again.

This is common, don't stress it. You can call the vet tomorrow, but once it stops, it starts to heal.
!!! this is very serious. styptic powder? if you have any use it quick if not try flower or baking powder. put it on the nail and if it doesnt stop bleeding in a few minutes take it to a vet (emergency vets and 24 hour vet hospitals are in every city almost.....!!)

this happened to a dog at the pet store i worked at and it woudlnt stop bleeding so they had to take him and get it cauterized.
Try putting some flour on it if you don't have any septic powder.

Apply some pressure with a clean cloth (if the dog will allow it) and also applying some ice may help stop the bleeding.

Be sure to take him to the vet as infection is a possibility with a torn nail.
neosporin and bandage the paw - do not let the dog walk around - keep him laying down until the blood stops running, if he continues to walk the blood will be pumped to the paw. it isn't as bad as it looks, our dog came in with the nail completely pulled out one time, dunno how she managed that, but that's what we did and it stopped bleeding after a few minutes.
is it the nail or the actual dew claw? nail dip it in flour see is it stops bleeding. If it is the actual dew claw apply pressure for 5 min. if it doesn.t sto[p call the ER VET.
that happend to my dog too. i was gunna take him to the vet but i thought about it and hes really not worth it. i hope he dies
dip it in flour and while you wait to see if it stops bleeding, find a number for a 24 hr vet and be ready to call.
I heard that running a bar of soap along it will clog it and sanitize it.

Good luck!
