When you get hit really hard on the nail why does it turn purple?

In P.E this girl through the basketball and all the impact went to my thumb and first my turned white then purple!(This all happened really fast too.) Is it like bruise? It was throbbing and hurt SO much!

It was a bruise. A bruise is when tissue is damaged but contained under the skin and in this case, under the nail. Your finger was injured.
Its like any other bruise.. It turns purple because a bruise its just blood clogged up so you dont have to worry!!
