Just to add one thing to Kay_floods answer......After soaking and draining and patting dry, soak or pour hydrogen peroxide over the infected area. Then rub in some neosporene cream or salve. That is great for cuts and infections. Keep the area as clean as possible. You may have to repeat those procedures often. My left toe swelled up and has green puss running out under of the toe nail. what the hell could it be?
it isn't gangrene yet, all it is is a staph infection at this point, probably from an ingrown nail. The nurse you talked to was right, soak it in water as warm as you can stand, epsom salt might help, won't hurt, but the important thing is the soaking. Do it for at least twenty minutes three or four times a day, this gets the infection to drain away and reduces the swelling and inflammation, then make an appointment with your doctor to have the ingrown nail removed.
The pus is a sign of infection. It could be an ingrown toenail, or something else. If it was ingrown, you'd have felt the pressure before the pus.

The Epsom soak should help. If it doesn't heal, go to a podiatrist.
Sounds like an ingrown toenail. You should go see a doctor and from the way you describe it, it may be infected. You need to go to the doctor asap! They will cut the side of the nail off so it will grown straight.
well you definetly have an infection. if not an ingrown toe nail, then possibly a spider bite, or something sharp poking in between your toe and underneath your nail.

Go to the ER if your that worried about it. Gangrene has nothing to do with green puss.
ITS SOUNDS LIKE AN IN-GROWN TOENAIL GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET IT CUT OUT OR CLEAN IT WITH PEROXIDE
Its an ingrown toenail.
ingrowing toenail? get to the docs in the mornin!!!!
